The
name "Manjimup"
is believed to be derived from the Aboriginal term "Manjin".
Manjin is a leafy marsh plant with an edible root that is reported to
have grown in abundance at a nearby waterhole and is considered
important to the Aboriginal diet. It is recorded that the first(1859) white settlers to the area were Charles Rose & Frank Hall. During the 1860's a fellow by the name of Mottram became owner of Hall's property and titled the homestead "Manjimup House" . It is also noted that Manjimup Brook was so named by the surveyor T Treen in 1863.

In the late 1890s Manjimup and the surrounding area was declared an Agricultural Area and in 1902 nearby Balbarrup was declared a townsite. In 1903 the township name of Manjimup nominated by The Nelson Roads Board as a name, and the townsite was gazetted. The railway from Bridgetown was extended to Wilgarup in 1909 and open to transportation by 1911. The new line terminated close to the original Manjimup homestead - approximately 5 km west of the 1903 townsite and the station was named Manjimup. The new townsite was named Manjimupp in 1910. In the same year the original townsite of Manjimup was retitled Balbarrup. The local spelling of Manjimupp was officially changed to Manjimup in 1915. |
