So much to do in Manjimup Western Australia

MANJIMUP WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The name "Manjimup" is believed to be derived from the Aboriginal term "Manjin". Manjin is a leafy marsh plant with an edible root that is reported to have grown in abundance at a nearby watering hole and is considered important to the Aboriginal diet.

It is recorded that Charles Rose & Frank Hall were the first European settlers in the area in 1859 . During the 1860's a fellow by the name of Mottram became owner of Hall's property and titled the homestead "Manjimup House".  Manjimup Brook was similarly named by the surveyor T Treen in 1863.

In the late 1890s Manjimup and the surrounding area was declared an Agricultural Zone and in 1902 nearby Balbarrup was officially declared a townsite. In 1903 the township name of Manjimup was nominated by The Nelson Roads Board and the townsite was gazetted.

The railway from Bridgetown extended to Wilgarup in 1909 and opened to transport by 1911. The new line terminated close to the original Manjimup homestead - approximately  5 km west of the 1903 townsite and the station was also titled Manjimup. The new townsite was actually named Manjimupp in 1910. In the same year the original townsite of Manjimup was renamed Balbarrup. The local spelling of Manjimupp was officially changed to Manjimup in 1915

Manjimup Western Australia

Home to Western Australia's only Timber Museum, the Timber & Heritage Park in Manjimup houses a unique variety of historical and contemporary timber related exhibits. Within it's 24 acre boundary you will find yourself amongst parkland with flowing streams and brooks. The winding pathways lead you through a delightful array of 4000 wildflower varieties and native scrub that surrounds examples of the tall timber that has made the region famous.

As you stroll though the park you will take a trip into the past and visit The Bunnings Age Of Steam Museum which displays an original saw milling steam locomotive. Also on display are eclectic examples of early mill tools & equipment such as a whim, steam hauler, logging arches and more.

After the interesting visit to the Timber Museum you will also see the Old Police Station and Lockup in the Historical Hamlet. Other buildings in the Hamlet include an early Settlers Cottage, 1940's Doctors Surgery, Old School Playground & One Teacher School, Forest Department Office and the 18 meter Fire Tower Lookout which you may wish to climb.

Other features of the Park include The Timber Museum which features regional historical facts. There are other outdoor exhibits of unique Timber specimens and assorted machinery.
